Municipal sludge cake—the dewatered byproduct of wastewater treatment with a solids content typically ranging from 15% to 30%—presents unique storage challenges. Unlike liquid sludge, sludge cake is semi-solid, highly abrasive, and chemically aggressive due to concentrated volatile organic compounds and hydrogen sulfide (H_2S). Glass-Fused-to-Steel (GFS) tanks have emerged as the premier solution for sludge cake storage, providing the structural integrity of steel with the chemical and abrasion resistance of glass.

Why is GFS better than concrete for sludge cake?
